Characteristics

Paeonia ‘Red Red Rose’ doesn’t hint, suggest, or whisper—it announces itself, in full red, from the moment it opens. Its semi-double blooms arrive early in the season, carried on strong, clean stems and layered in rich crimson with just a flicker of yellow at the centre, like a match struck in a velvet room. No side buds, no clutter—just one commanding bloom per stem, and very high productivity that keeps the colour coming. Introduced in 1942, this hybrid hasn’t aged—it’s stayed sharp.

Origin Red Red Rose Peony

Released during a decade when the world sought hard-working plants over finicky beauty, ‘Red Red Rose’ was bred for resilience, not romance. But somewhere along the line, it managed to deliver both. This hybrid’s roots stretch back to the early evolution of modern peonies, where structure, flowering speed and field-readiness were the goal. It still ticks those boxes—with the added bonus of a bloom that holds its colour like a fresh coat of lacquer, even under spring sun.

HYBRID

Hybrids like ‘Red Red Rose’ are built for performance, and this one doesn’t disappoint. With no side buds, the plant channels its energy into one perfect flower per stem—tall, symmetrical, and ready to cut. Its early blooming habit fits seamlessly into harvest schedules, and it keeps its shape during processing and transit. A practical choice, yes—but with more than enough presence to carry itself into the premium ranks.

How to plant

What follows are the steps for planting Red Red Rose peony roots:
Peonies flourish in locations with plenty of sunlight and well-draining soil. Choose a location that receives at least six hours of sunlight every day and has organic-rich soil. Create a hole that is 30 cm (12 inches) broad and 10 cm (4 inches) deep. To boost soil fertility, loosen the soil at the bottom of the hole with a garden fork or spade and mix in some compost or well-rotted manure. Remove any stones or trash and break up any clumps. Insert the peony root into the hole so that the eyes (or growth buds) face up and are no more than 5 cm (2 inches) below the soil surface. Backfill the hole with dirt, gently firming it down to remove any air pockets. Thoroughly water the newly planted peony root to help settle the dirt around the roots. Soak the soil around the plant using a watering can or hose, being careful not to wash it away. Mulch the plant’s base with a 5 to 7.5 cm (2 to 3 inch) layer of organic mulch, such as shredded bark or straw.
