Characteristics

Paeonia ‘HIGHLIGHT’ doesn’t shy away — it commands attention. With its commanding red bomb-type flowers and resolute 90 cm stems, this Lactiflora variety is a workhorse in the field and a standout in the vase. Each stem supports side buds, ensuring a generous flowering performance throughout the mid-season. Bred in 1952 yet still a staple today, it owes its staying power to its high productivity and unmistakable floral architecture. For growers who value visual impact and cutting reliability, ‘HIGHLIGHT’ earns its name, season after season.

Origin HIGHLIGHT Peony

As a proud member of the Lactiflora lineage, ‘HIGHLIGHT’ inherits the robust qualities that have long made this type a mainstay in horticulture. Originating from traditional East Asian stock, Lactiflora peonies were prized not only for their decorative appeal but also for their adaptability. ‘HIGHLIGHT’, introduced in the early sixties, quickly garnered respect in professional circles thanks to its bold presence and consistent performance. Its dense, full-form blooms remain a preferred choice for markets demanding structure, stamina, and spectacle.

LACTIFLORA

Lactiflora peonies are the backbone of large-scale peony cultivation. Their dependable blooming habits, upright growth, and multipurpose appeal make them indispensable for commercial flower farming. ‘HIGHLIGHT’ embodies the best of this group: vigorous, well-structured, and unmistakably classic — with a crimson twist.

How to plant

What follows are the steps for planting Highlight peony roots:
Peonies flourish in locations with plenty of sunlight and well-draining soil. Choose a location that receives at least six hours of sunlight every day and has organic-rich soil. Create a hole that is 30 cm (12 inches) broad and 10 cm (4 inches) deep. To boost soil fertility, loosen the soil at the bottom of the hole with a garden fork or spade and mix in some compost or well-rotted manure. Remove any stones or trash and break up any clumps. Insert the peony root into the hole so that the eyes (or growth buds) face up and are no more than 5 cm (2 inches) below the soil surface. Backfill the hole with dirt, gently firming it down to remove any air pockets. Thoroughly water the newly planted peony root to help settle the dirt around the roots. Soak the soil around the plant using a watering can or hose, being careful not to wash it away. Mulch the plant’s base with a 5 to 7.5 cm (2 to 3 inch) layer of organic mulch, such as shredded bark or straw.
