Characteristics

Paeonia hybrid ‘America’ is no quiet presence in the garden—it arrives early, vivid, and unapologetically bold. The semi-double blooms erupt in a saturated cardinal red, each petal curving back to reveal a crown of golden stamens that gleam like polished brass. At around 80 cm tall, this cultivar offers robust, self-supporting stems and a compact habit, tailored for both ornamental borders and high-yield cut flower production. Lightly fragrant and quick to establish, ‘America’ thrives where performance matters.

Origin America Peony

Bred by Alan Rogers in 1976, ‘America’ was designed for growers who value impact and reliability. It descends from a lineage of hybrid peonies that draw from species such as Paeonia officinalis and Paeonia lactiflora—types historically prized for their resilience and vigour. Its early flowering window makes it a strategic choice for early-season markets, while its striking colour earns it a lasting place in curated plantings and field production alike.

HYBRID

Hybrid peonies are built for more than beauty. They deliver structure, stamina, and an earlier bloom cycle—traits especially sought after in commercial cultivation. ‘America’ stands out among them, not only for its brilliant hue but for its uniformity and stem strength. A favourite among growers for its dependable vase life and marketable stem length, this is a variety that works as hard as it dazzles.

How to plant

What follows are the steps for planting America peony roots:
Peonies flourish in locations with plenty of sunlight and well-draining soil. Choose a location that receives at least six hours of sunlight every day and has organic-rich soil. Create a hole that is 30 cm (12 inches) broad and 10 cm (4 inches) deep. To boost soil fertility, loosen the soil at the bottom of the hole with a garden fork or spade and mix in some compost or well-rotted manure. Remove any stones or trash and break up any clumps. Insert the peony root into the hole so that the eyes (or growth buds) face up and are no more than 5 cm (2 inches) below the soil surface. Backfill the hole with dirt, gently firming it down to remove any air pockets. Thoroughly water the newly planted peony root to help settle the dirt around the roots. Soak the soil around the plant using a watering can or hose, being careful not to wash it away. Mulch the plant’s base with a 5 to 7.5 cm (2 to 3 inch) layer of organic mulch, such as shredded bark or straw.
