Characteristics

Paeonia Eliza Lundi presents itself with the kind of confidence that doesn’t require embellishment. This early blooming hybrid peony bears deep red, densely double flowers that rise on sturdy, leaf-lined stems—each stem a single statement, clean and unencumbered by side buds. What sets Eliza Lundi apart isn’t just its colour, but its discipline: a uniformity in bloom that lends itself perfectly to both field structure and commercial cutting. With notably high productivity and a standard growth height, it performs reliably in scale, season after season.

Origin Eliza Lundi Peony

Bred and introduced in 1976, Eliza Lundi belongs to the class of hybrid peonies—a group developed through cross-species cultivation to combine endurance with elegance. Hybrid peonies like this one trace their legacy through decades of selective breeding, balancing botanical rigor with aesthetic clarity. Whether viewed from the lens of horticultural efficiency or ornamental value, Eliza Lundi stands firm in its dual role: as a grower’s workhorse and a collector’s perennial classic.

HYBRID

The hybrid peony class is revered for its structural integrity, early flowering rhythm, and resistance to disease—all qualities that find full expression in Eliza Lundi. Its early emergence and uniformity make it especially valuable for large-scale production environments where predictability is key. From mid-20th century breeding programs to today’s precision cultivation, this variety continues to deliver—without flourish, but with unshakable presence.

How to plant

What follows are the steps for planting Eliza Lundi peony roots:
Peonies flourish in locations with plenty of sunlight and well-draining soil. Choose a location that receives at least six hours of sunlight every day and has organic-rich soil. Create a hole that is 30 cm (12 inches) broad and 10 cm (4 inches) deep. To boost soil fertility, loosen the soil at the bottom of the hole with a garden fork or spade and mix in some compost or well-rotted manure. Remove any stones or trash and break up any clumps. Insert the peony root into the hole so that the eyes (or growth buds) face up and are no more than 5 cm (2 inches) below the soil surface. Backfill the hole with dirt, gently firming it down to remove any air pockets. Thoroughly water the newly planted peony root to help settle the dirt around the roots. Soak the soil around the plant using a watering can or hose, being careful not to wash it away. Mulch the plant’s base with a 5 to 7.5 cm (2 to 3 inch) layer of organic mulch, such as shredded bark or straw.
