How to plant peonies? When you plan to plant peonies, it is important to know when to plant a peony, where to plant a peony and how deep to plant a peony. We will explain to you how to plant them step by step in this blog.

When to plant a peony

The best time to plant bare root peonies is in the fall (before the first frost). This will give them the best chance of blooming the following spring. The peonies, that are planted in spring, may not bloom for two years or even longer. That is of course very unfortunate because you will have to wait a very long time before you can enjoy them. Therefore, the best time to plant them is in the fall.

Where to plant peonies

It’s important that peonies are planted on a location where they have 6 to 8 hours of sunlight a day. Besides, they need good drainage and plenty of space. To grow peonies successfully, the right spot is essential. Experts also suggest planting them far away from large trees and shrubs because they don’t like root competition.

How deep to plant peonies

How deep a peony should be planted, depends on the type and climate. There are three types of peonies. We will explain for every type at what depth it should be planted:

  • Herbaceous: These have to be positioned below the soil surface with their next year’s buds 1/2 inch (zones where it’s warmer) to 2 inches.
  • Tree: They have to be planted deeper than the herbaceous type. Tree peonies should be planted 4 to 6 inches below soil level.
  • Intersectional: Plant them below the soil surface, 1/2 inch deep in warmer zones, 1.5 inches in cooler zones.
