How to get peonies to open

  • 9 July 2026

Peonies are known for their large, beautiful flowers, but sometimes the buds stay closed longer than expected. This can happen both in the garden and after peonies have been harvested. In this blog, we explain what helps peonies open naturally and why some buds may never fully bloom.

This blog in short

  • Most peonies open naturally under the right conditions
  • Healthy, mature buds are more likely to bloom
  • Water, light and temperature all affect the opening process
  • Peonies cannot be forced to open
  • Proper care gives peonies the best chance to bloom

Why are my peonies not opening?

There are several reasons why peony buds may stay closed. One of the most common reasons is that the buds are not ready to bloom yet. The weather, temperature and the overall health of the plant can also affect how quickly the flowers open.

For harvested peonies, water is just as important. If the stems cannot absorb enough water, the buds may open more slowly or, in some cases, not at all. Even with good care, some buds simply do not develop into fully opened flowers.

What helps peonies open naturally?

Peonies open best when they have the right growing conditions. Healthy plants, enough water and the right temperature all help the buds develop into full flowers. Whether peonies are growing in the garden or placed in a vase, the right conditions give them the best chance to bloom naturally.

Garden peonies grow best in healthy, well-drained soil with plenty of sunlight. After harvesting, clean water, freshly cut stems and a clean vase help the flowers absorb water and support the natural opening process.

Steps to support the opening process

While you cannot force peonies to bloom, the following steps help create the best conditions for the buds to open.

Step What to do Why it matters
1 Check if the buds feel slightly soft Mature buds are more likely to open
2 Keep peonies well watered or place them in fresh water after harvesting Helps the buds stay hydrated
3 Give peonies enough sunlight or indirect daylight Supports natural flower growth
4 Use clean water and recut the stems if needed Improves water uptake
5 Be patient and let the buds develop naturally Not all peonies bloom at the same speed

Why do some peonies never open?

Not every peony bud will bloom successfully. One of the most important reasons is that the buds were harvested too early. Professional growers usually harvest peonies during the soft bud stage, often called the “marshmallow stage”. At this stage, the buds are firm but slightly soft to the touch and have the best chance of opening fully.

Other factors can also affect the opening process. A lack of water, poor growing conditions or damage during transport may prevent buds from developing properly. Even with the best care, some peonies will never fully open.

Proper care gives peonies the best chance to bloom

Most peonies open naturally when the buds are healthy and the conditions are right. While you cannot force peonies to bloom, good care helps support the natural opening process. Healthy plants, enough water and a little patience give peonies the best chance to develop into beautiful, fully opened flowers.
