Characteristics

Paeonia ‘White Vanguard’ doesn’t wait for spring to get started — it leads it. This tall, early-rising hybrid sends up long stems topped with elegant white double blooms, opening around a golden centre with a quiet flicker of carmine at the heart. It’s a peony that seems to catch the morning light before the rest — precise, upright, and already in bloom while others are still in bud. Though it forms no side buds, its high primary productivity ensures the field doesn’t feel the absence. Bred for growers who value punctuality as much as beauty.

Origin White Vanguard Peony

Brought to market in 2020, ‘White Vanguard’ was developed as a botanical counterpoint to the late bloomers — something early, tall, and market-ready before the first wave hits. It was designed not just to fill a seasonal gap, but to offer structure and elegance in a window where demand meets scarcity.

HYBRID
Hybrid peonies are purpose-bred: selected not for nostalgia, but for performance. Their genetics offer stability, resilience, and sharper bloom timing — often blooming days or even weeks ahead of lactifloras. ‘White Vanguard’ stands among this new class of early hybrids, with long stems, firm carriage, and a bloom that holds its form even in cool, early air.

How to plant

What follows are the steps for planting White Vanguard peony roots:
Peonies flourish in locations with plenty of sunlight and well-draining soil. Choose a location that receives at least six hours of sunlight every day and has organic-rich soil. Create a hole that is 30 cm (12 inches) broad and 10 cm (4 inches) deep. To boost soil fertility, loosen the soil at the bottom of the hole with a garden fork or spade and mix in some compost or well-rotted manure. Remove any stones or trash and break up any clumps. Insert the peony root into the hole so that the eyes (or growth buds) face up and are no more than 5 cm (2 inches) below the soil surface. Backfill the hole with dirt, gently firming it down to remove any air pockets. Thoroughly water the newly planted peony root to help settle the dirt around the roots. Soak the soil around the plant using a watering can or hose, being careful not to wash it away. Mulch the plant’s base with a 5 to 7.5 cm (2 to 3 inch) layer of organic mulch, such as shredded bark or straw.
