Characteristics

Paeonia ‘Sunshine Sensation’ doesn’t bloom quietly—it ignites. Each semi-double flower glows with a warm orange hue that smoulders from base to tip, its petals flaring open like the sunrise on a clear June morning. The golden stamens leap from the centre, wild and electric, lighting up the bloom’s heart with kinetic energy. With no side buds to steal the moment, every flower arrives like a soloist: unapologetically present, perfectly timed, and impossible to overlook. A true midseason spectacle.

Origin Sunshine Sensation Peony

Released in 2017, ‘Sunshine Sensation’ was bred not to blend in but to burn bright. A variety for growers who need more than pastel, this intersectional peony was designed to shift the temperature of a field. Not simply decorative, but directional. It’s a bloom that adds friction, lifts palettes, and—most importantly—holds that heat through harvest and vase. While others soften as they mature, this one keeps its edge. Sunshine, yes. But with bite.

INTERSECTIONAL

With its hybrid lineage, ‘Sunshine Sensation’ offers structural consistency and a no-nonsense plant form. Normal stem length makes it versatile for cut use, while the semi-double bloom remains stable through variable weather. No side buds means less labour, fewer surprises, and a unified flowering moment. The foliage holds shape late into the season, giving growers a plant that performs as well vegetatively as it does florally. Compact. Bright. Reliable.

How to plant

What follows are the steps for planting Sunshine Sensation peony roots:
Peonies flourish in locations with plenty of sunlight and well-draining soil. Choose a location that receives at least six hours of sunlight every day and has organic-rich soil. Create a hole that is 30 cm (12 inches) broad and 10 cm (4 inches) deep. To boost soil fertility, loosen the soil at the bottom of the hole with a garden fork or spade and mix in some compost or well-rotted manure. Remove any stones or trash and break up any clumps. Insert the peony root into the hole so that the eyes (or growth buds) face up and are no more than 5 cm (2 inches) below the soil surface. Backfill the hole with dirt, gently firming it down to remove any air pockets. Thoroughly water the newly planted peony root to help settle the dirt around the roots. Soak the soil around the plant using a watering can or hose, being careful not to wash it away. Mulch the plant’s base with a 5 to 7.5 cm (2 to 3 inch) layer of organic mulch, such as shredded bark or straw.
