Characteristics

Paeonia ‘Sonoma Yedo’ blooms like a breath of warm wind—unfolding in loose, golden petals with just a hint of wildness at the edges. The flower shape is open, single, and informal, as if nature itself painted it in one confident stroke. At the centre: dark raspberry filaments burst from the yellow like flickers of spice. Midseason flowering, side buds, and a calm plant habit make this variety not only striking, but reliable. In a field of pinks, ‘Sonoma Yedo’ is the quiet sun that holds everything together.

Origin Sonoma Yedo Peony

Born in 2010 and bred with purpose, ‘Sonoma Yedo’ was never meant to shout. Its colour speaks in a low, clear tone—a yellow that stays clean without slipping into cream, bright without tipping into brass. This is a bloom for those who know the challenge of yellow in peonies: too many fade, too few stand. Yedo does both—holds the form, holds the pigment, holds the rhythm. From the field to the vase, this variety doesn’t just show up, it shows consistency.

INTERSECTIONAL

As an intersectional, ‘Sonoma Yedo’ combines the best of both bloodlines: the strength of woody peonies with the seasonal dependability of herbaceous types. Its single blooms allow for early opening and a cleaner fade, while the side buds stretch the season with ease. The plant holds its shape throughout, with healthy foliage and normal stem length that keeps handling simple. It’s a deluxe bloom with the temperament of a worker.

How to plant

What follows are the steps for planting Sonoma Yedo peony roots:
Peonies flourish in locations with plenty of sunlight and well-draining soil. Choose a location that receives at least six hours of sunlight every day and has organic-rich soil. Create a hole that is 30 cm (12 inches) broad and 10 cm (4 inches) deep. To boost soil fertility, loosen the soil at the bottom of the hole with a garden fork or spade and mix in some compost or well-rotted manure. Remove any stones or trash and break up any clumps. Insert the peony root into the hole so that the eyes (or growth buds) face up and are no more than 5 cm (2 inches) below the soil surface. Backfill the hole with dirt, gently firming it down to remove any air pockets. Thoroughly water the newly planted peony root to help settle the dirt around the roots. Soak the soil around the plant using a watering can or hose, being careful not to wash it away. Mulch the plant’s base with a 5 to 7.5 cm (2 to 3 inch) layer of organic mulch, such as shredded bark or straw.
