Characteristics

Paeonia ‘Sonoma Welcome’ doesn’t rush in—it arrives softly, like mist across early foliage. Its semi-double blooms open in a blend of pearl-pink and soft cream, with petals that feel barely opaque, almost lit from within. At the centre, a tangle of ivory filaments and blush-pink carpels offers just enough contrast to keep things interesting. Midseason flowering, side buds, and a moderate habit make it a natural rhythm keeper in any field. It doesn’t try to impress—it simply stays, steady and luminous, long after louder flowers fade.

Origin Sonoma Welcome Peony

Introduced in 1999 as part of the Sonoma line, ‘Welcome’ lives up to its name. It was bred not for drama but for balance—something that could pair quietly with bolder varieties and still hold its own. While others compete for attention, ‘Sonoma Welcome’ calmly fills the gaps, bringing structure, poise, and a colour tone that feels like a breath in the middle of bloom chaos. Growers return to it. Designers trust it. And fields feel more complete because of it.

INTERSECTIONAL

As a midseason intersectional, ‘Sonoma Welcome’ carries the best of both parent lines: strong stems, resilient foliage, and elegant, repeatable flowering. Its side buds allow for prolonged presence without losing shape or intention. The plant stays clean. The bloom keeps its form. And its role in the crop cycle is clear—it’s the subtle one that makes the rest better.

How to plant

What follows are the steps for planting Sonoma Welcome peony roots:
Peonies flourish in locations with plenty of sunlight and well-draining soil. Choose a location that receives at least six hours of sunlight every day and has organic-rich soil. Create a hole that is 30 cm (12 inches) broad and 10 cm (4 inches) deep. To boost soil fertility, loosen the soil at the bottom of the hole with a garden fork or spade and mix in some compost or well-rotted manure. Remove any stones or trash and break up any clumps. Insert the peony root into the hole so that the eyes (or growth buds) face up and are no more than 5 cm (2 inches) below the soil surface. Backfill the hole with dirt, gently firming it down to remove any air pockets. Thoroughly water the newly planted peony root to help settle the dirt around the roots. Soak the soil around the plant using a watering can or hose, being careful not to wash it away. Mulch the plant’s base with a 5 to 7.5 cm (2 to 3 inch) layer of organic mulch, such as shredded bark or straw.
