Characteristics

Paeonia ‘Sonoma Amethyst’ doesn’t just bloom—it announces itself. The semi-double flowers burst open in hot pink, with ruffled edges and a flash of golden stamens that shimmer like late sunlight through coloured glass. Midseason blooming with side buds and normal-length stems, this intersectional brings energy without chaos. Its petals move like fabric in motion—never stiff, never static. Since its debut in 2001, ‘Sonoma Amethyst’ has offered growers something rare: bold colour without compromise, and form that knows exactly what it’s doing.

Origin Sonoma Amethyst Peony

Bred under the Sonoma banner and built for brilliance, this peony was never designed to disappear into the background. Where others soften, ‘Sonoma Amethyst’ sharpens. It was created to bring richer tones into the intersectional family—something unapologetically pink, but still precise. With its Californian roots and international adaptability, it has quickly become a dependable splash of confidence in midseason production blocks. It doesn’t behave like a novelty, but it doesn’t act like an old soul either. It just shows up. Strong.

INTERSECTIONAL

As an intersectional, this variety brings consistency to its colour: no fading, no flopping, and a clean, reliable plant habit. The midseason rhythm makes it a versatile fit between early and late crops, while side buds extend harvest without clutter. Foliage holds late. Stems stay upright. And the flowers? They do the talking.

How to plant

What follows are the steps for planting Sonoma Amethyst peony roots:
Peonies flourish in locations with plenty of sunlight and well-draining soil. Choose a location that receives at least six hours of sunlight every day and has organic-rich soil. Create a hole that is 30 cm (12 inches) broad and 10 cm (4 inches) deep. To boost soil fertility, loosen the soil at the bottom of the hole with a garden fork or spade and mix in some compost or well-rotted manure. Remove any stones or trash and break up any clumps. Insert the peony root into the hole so that the eyes (or growth buds) face up and are no more than 5 cm (2 inches) below the soil surface. Backfill the hole with dirt, gently firming it down to remove any air pockets. Thoroughly water the newly planted peony root to help settle the dirt around the roots. Soak the soil around the plant using a watering can or hose, being careful not to wash it away. Mulch the plant’s base with a 5 to 7.5 cm (2 to 3 inch) layer of organic mulch, such as shredded bark or straw.
