Characteristics

Paeonia ‘Solange’ doesn’t enter the season—it closes it, like a curtain drawn in gold-tinged silence. Its tall, double blooms carry a soft pink hue that drifts almost into ivory as the light shifts. Layered petals form dense, rounded heads that hold shape without ever feeling heavy. Side buds stretch the flowering season, offering a long and steady finale to any crop. Introduced in 1907 and still upright more than a century later, ‘Solange’ isn’t just a variety. It’s an anchor.

Origin Solange Peony

Over a hundred years ago, ‘Solange’ was bred for structure, rhythm, and return. And it has kept its promise. Season after season, its stems rise tall, and its blooms arrive exactly when they should—late, elegant, never rushed. It doesn’t follow fashion, and it doesn’t demand attention. It simply arrives, does what it’s meant to do, and leaves you wondering why others try harder. In the world of peonies, that’s rare.

LACTIFLORA

As a textbook lactiflora, ‘Solange’ offers growers a familiar framework—predictable flowering, firm stems, and side buds that gently stagger the bloom. But what sets it apart is grace: the way it holds itself, the calm tone of its petals, the quiet strength in its late-season timing. It isn’t just useful. It’s composed.

How to plant

What follows are the steps for planting Solange peony roots:
Peonies flourish in locations with plenty of sunlight and well-draining soil. Choose a location that receives at least six hours of sunlight every day and has organic-rich soil. Create a hole that is 30 cm (12 inches) broad and 10 cm (4 inches) deep. To boost soil fertility, loosen the soil at the bottom of the hole with a garden fork or spade and mix in some compost or well-rotted manure. Remove any stones or trash and break up any clumps. Insert the peony root into the hole so that the eyes (or growth buds) face up and are no more than 5 cm (2 inches) below the soil surface. Backfill the hole with dirt, gently firming it down to remove any air pockets. Thoroughly water the newly planted peony root to help settle the dirt around the roots. Soak the soil around the plant using a watering can or hose, being careful not to wash it away. Mulch the plant’s base with a 5 to 7.5 cm (2 to 3 inch) layer of organic mulch, such as shredded bark or straw.
