CHARACTERISTICS

Paeonia ‘Royal Blush’ reveals itself with quiet complexity. This intersectional cultivar opens mid-season with tall stems bearing semi-double flowers in an understated blend of soft orange and ivory tones, lightly tinged with blush towards the centre. The gently cupped petals surround prominent golden stamens, offering both depth and contrast within a restrained palette. With no side buds to dilute energy, each stem supports a single, well-formed bloom—ideal for growers seeking structural clarity and focused flowering. ‘Royal Blush’ performs with subtle poise, making it a natural fit within premium assortments aimed at high-end floral or landscape use.

ORIGIN ROYAL BLUSH PEONY

Though its exact year of introduction remains undocumented, ‘Royal Blush’ exemplifies the breeding goals of modern intersectional peonies—combining woody perennial strength with refined flower morphology. As part of the Itoh lineage, it inherits the resilience of herbaceous peonies and the floral expressiveness of tree peonies. Its pastel orange colouring sets it apart within the category, offering visual distinction without overpowering. Selected for both ornamental finesse and dependable garden behaviour, this cultivar aligns with the deluxe classification through both appearance and performance.

INTERSECTIONAL

Intersectional peonies are bred to bridge form and function—providing robust, bushy growth, disease resistance, and low-maintenance upkeep. ‘Royal Blush’ holds its form well throughout the season and maintains its floral presentation without flopping or fading. With tall stems and a singular flower per shoot, it lends itself to streamlined harvesting and reliable spacing in field or landscape schemes. As with many Itoh types, flowering emerges from new shoots annually, supporting consistent yearly regeneration and commercial reliability.

How to plant

What follows are the steps for planting Royal Blush peony roots:
Peonies flourish in locations with plenty of sunlight and well-draining soil. Choose a location that receives at least six hours of sunlight every day and has organic-rich soil. Create a hole that is 30 cm (12 inches) broad and 10 cm (4 inches) deep. To boost soil fertility, loosen the soil at the bottom of the hole with a garden fork or spade and mix in some compost or well-rotted manure. Remove any stones or trash and break up any clumps. Insert the peony root into the hole so that the eyes (or growth buds) face up and are no more than 5 cm (2 inches) below the soil surface. Backfill the hole with dirt, gently firming it down to remove any air pockets. Thoroughly water the newly planted peony root to help settle the dirt around the roots. Soak the soil around the plant using a watering can or hose, being careful not to wash it away. Mulch the plant’s base with a 5 to 7.5 cm (2 to 3 inch) layer of organic mulch, such as shredded bark or straw.
