Characteristics

Paeonia ‘Raggedy Ann’ brings a touch of mischief to the mid-season garden. Her double pink blooms, full of texture and light movement, give the impression of petals just caught in a breeze—ruffled, relaxed, but never disorderly. There’s a golden glow at the heart of each flower, a subtle contrast that draws the eye inward. With no side buds and moderate productivity, every stem delivers one focused statement—clean, upright, and unmistakably elegant. First introduced in 1958, ‘Raggedy Ann’ has remained quietly relevant in the field: a Deluxe peony with more nuance than noise.

Origin Raggedy Ann Peony

Bred during the early era of intersectional development, ‘Raggedy Ann’ belongs to a select group of cultivars that combined perennial durability with ornamental complexity. The intersectional, or Itoh, peony was still new in the West at the time, and cultivars like this helped define the standard. Rooted in the genetics of both herbaceous and tree peonies, ‘Raggedy Ann’ shows its heritage not in grandiosity, but in control—compact, repeatable, and consistent across planting years.

INTERSECTIONAL

Intersectionals like ‘Raggedy Ann’ offer growers a pragmatic kind of beauty. The plant holds itself well—no staking, no sprawl—and the lack of side buds means all energy flows to the main bloom. It’s a format that rewards design thinking: each stem delivers one defined element. In production, that means predictability. In planting schemes, it means visual clarity.

How to plant

What follows are the steps for planting Raggedy Ann peony roots:
Peonies flourish in locations with plenty of sunlight and well-draining soil. Choose a location that receives at least six hours of sunlight every day and has organic-rich soil. Create a hole that is 30 cm (12 inches) broad and 10 cm (4 inches) deep. To boost soil fertility, loosen the soil at the bottom of the hole with a garden fork or spade and mix in some compost or well-rotted manure. Remove any stones or trash and break up any clumps. Insert the peony root into the hole so that the eyes (or growth buds) face up and are no more than 5 cm (2 inches) below the soil surface. Backfill the hole with dirt, gently firming it down to remove any air pockets. Thoroughly water the newly planted peony root to help settle the dirt around the roots. Soak the soil around the plant using a watering can or hose, being careful not to wash it away. Mulch the plant’s base with a 5 to 7.5 cm (2 to 3 inch) layer of organic mulch, such as shredded bark or straw.
