Characteristics

Paeonia ‘Project X’ doesn’t make a grand entrance—it arrives with quiet certainty. Towering on tall stems, this late-blooming lactiflora unveils crisp white double blooms, their petals layered like folded parchment, sometimes touched with a hint of blush at the crown. High productivity and well-formed side buds ensure an extended flowering period, while each bloom maintains its poise. Though the exact origin remains undocumented, this variety proves itself in performance. A Standard-category peony by classification, but in the field? It earns a far more commanding reputation.

Origin Project X Peony

Despite its enigmatic name, ‘Project X’ belongs to a clear botanical tradition. Lactiflora peonies—cultivated for centuries across East Asia—are known for their perennial reliability and floral generosity. This variety fits seamlessly into that lineage. With its tall habit and late-season rhythm, it offers growers a consistent and elegant white option, one that delivers both in volume and visual clarity. It may be a mystery on paper, but in the row, its behaviour is anything but uncertain.

LACTIFLORA

‘Project X’ reflects all the hallmarks of a true lactiflora: strong stems, structured form, and dependable blooming. Its height makes it ideal for cut flower production, while the abundance of buds ensures marketable output over an extended period. The blooms themselves strike a balance—large, yet never unwieldy; refined, yet substantial. It’s a choice for professionals who value rhythm, repetition, and control in their flowering calendar.

How to plant

What follows are the steps for planting Project X peony roots:
Peonies flourish in locations with plenty of sunlight and well-draining soil. Choose a location that receives at least six hours of sunlight every day and has organic-rich soil. Create a hole that is 30 cm (12 inches) broad and 10 cm (4 inches) deep. To boost soil fertility, loosen the soil at the bottom of the hole with a garden fork or spade and mix in some compost or well-rotted manure. Remove any stones or trash and break up any clumps. Insert the peony root into the hole so that the eyes (or growth buds) face up and are no more than 5 cm (2 inches) below the soil surface. Backfill the hole with dirt, gently firming it down to remove any air pockets. Thoroughly water the newly planted peony root to help settle the dirt around the roots. Soak the soil around the plant using a watering can or hose, being careful not to wash it away. Mulch the plant’s base with a 5 to 7.5 cm (2 to 3 inch) layer of organic mulch, such as shredded bark or straw.
