Characteristics

Paeonia ‘Pietertje Vriend’ doesn’t bloom quietly—it erupts, deliberately, with a cascade of blush-pink petals that seem to billow outward like silk caught in a breeze. These double flowers are unapologetically full, their texture as rich as their form. Blooming late in the season, this lactiflora balances out the peony calendar with stamina and style. It carries side buds and offers high productivity, ensuring that every plant yields a generous, staggered display. Introduced in 1996 and falling under the Standard category, ‘Pietertje Vriend’ is the kind of cultivar that doesn’t just meet expectations—it anchors entire rows with confidence.

Origin Pietertje Vriend Peony

Lactiflora peonies have long been bred for utility and elegance, and ‘Pietertje Vriend’ is a textbook example of both. With roots in centuries-old horticultural practices from East Asia, the variety builds on a tradition of dependability and floral abundance. It’s a cultivar that fits seamlessly into large-scale growing plans but never loses its ornamental appeal—a balance of precision and beauty that makes it a grower’s favourite across climates and markets.

LACTIFLORA

As a true lactiflora, ‘Pietertje Vriend’ ticks all the boxes: uniform growth, strong stems, and excellent side bud development. Its blooms hold well in both field and vase, and the mid-height habit offers versatility across production setups. This is a variety made for growers who expect both visual performance and logistical efficiency—and want their late-season offerings to speak clearly, without compromise.

How to plant

What follows are the steps for planting Pietertje Vriend peony roots:
Peonies flourish in locations with plenty of sunlight and well-draining soil. Choose a location that receives at least six hours of sunlight every day and has organic-rich soil. Create a hole that is 30 cm (12 inches) broad and 10 cm (4 inches) deep. To boost soil fertility, loosen the soil at the bottom of the hole with a garden fork or spade and mix in some compost or well-rotted manure. Remove any stones or trash and break up any clumps. Insert the peony root into the hole so that the eyes (or growth buds) face up and are no more than 5 cm (2 inches) below the soil surface. Backfill the hole with dirt, gently firming it down to remove any air pockets. Thoroughly water the newly planted peony root to help settle the dirt around the roots. Soak the soil around the plant using a watering can or hose, being careful not to wash it away. Mulch the plant’s base with a 5 to 7.5 cm (2 to 3 inch) layer of organic mulch, such as shredded bark or straw.
