Characteristics

Paeonia ‘Petite Elegance’ may not stretch tall, but it leaves a lasting impression in every row it graces. Its double pink blooms unfold with a precision that feels almost ceremonial—soft petals laced with raspberry-pink edges, gathered like ruffled silk around a golden centre. Don’t let its height fool you: this mid-season cultivar is a powerhouse. With vigorous productivity and reliable side buds, it delivers more blooms per square metre than many of its taller cousins. Introduced in 1995 and ranked in the Standard category, ‘Petite Elegance’ brings structure, charm, and a rhythm growers quickly learn to count on.

Origin Petite Elegance Peony

Rooted in the legacy of East Asian lactiflora cultivation, ‘Petite Elegance’ reflects centuries of selection for both beauty and resilience. These peonies were never just ornamental—they were functional, adaptable, and prized for their workhorse reliability. This cultivar holds true to that lineage: compact, generous, and finely attuned to the grower’s calendar. Its size makes it ideal for tighter field configurations, while its bloom count keeps output high.

LACTIFLORA

A dependable lactiflora through and through, ‘Petite Elegance’ has the hallmark traits growers value: symmetry in form, uniformity in flowering, and adaptability across climate zones. Short but strong, it integrates effortlessly into both production lines and ornamental settings. For growers who balance scale with aesthetic finesse, it’s a quiet staple that performs without fuss.

How to plant

What follows are the steps for planting Petite Elegance peony roots:
Peonies flourish in locations with plenty of sunlight and well-draining soil. Choose a location that receives at least six hours of sunlight every day and has organic-rich soil. Create a hole that is 30 cm (12 inches) broad and 10 cm (4 inches) deep. To boost soil fertility, loosen the soil at the bottom of the hole with a garden fork or spade and mix in some compost or well-rotted manure. Remove any stones or trash and break up any clumps. Insert the peony root into the hole so that the eyes (or growth buds) face up and are no more than 5 cm (2 inches) below the soil surface. Backfill the hole with dirt, gently firming it down to remove any air pockets. Thoroughly water the newly planted peony root to help settle the dirt around the roots. Soak the soil around the plant using a watering can or hose, being careful not to wash it away. Mulch the plant’s base with a 5 to 7.5 cm (2 to 3 inch) layer of organic mulch, such as shredded bark or straw.
