Characteristics

Paeonia ‘Pearl S. Buck’ opens late in the season, but with such calm grandeur that it immediately commands attention. Its double white blooms, impeccably layered, appear almost sculptural in form—pure at first glance, yet often dusted with a hint of pink that catches the eye just before full bloom. Side buds ensure a succession of flowers, extending the display and making each stem a reliable performer. Tall, composed, and introduced in 2015, this Premium-category cultivar is designed for growers who value both elegance and return.

Origin Pearl S. Buck Peony

Lactiflora peonies trace their lineage to the traditional gardens of East Asia, where they were cultivated not just for beauty, but for resilience and versatility. ‘Pearl S. Buck’ is part of this long-standing tradition—refined over generations, yet unmistakably contemporary in its performance. It offers the architectural height, flower fullness, and lateral bud count prized by commercial growers and collectors alike.

LACTIFLORA

As a lactiflora type, this peony fits comfortably into large-scale production settings and curated perennial borders alike. Its tall growth habit and full heads provide both volume and vertical accent, especially valuable in late-blooming schemes. The combination of stately structure and quiet colour makes it as dependable as it is visually restrained—a true asset in strategic planting.

How to plant

What follows are the steps for planting Pearl S.Buck peony roots:
Peonies flourish in locations with plenty of sunlight and well-draining soil. Choose a location that receives at least six hours of sunlight every day and has organic-rich soil. Create a hole that is 30 cm (12 inches) broad and 10 cm (4 inches) deep. To boost soil fertility, loosen the soil at the bottom of the hole with a garden fork or spade and mix in some compost or well-rotted manure. Remove any stones or trash and break up any clumps. Insert the peony root into the hole so that the eyes (or growth buds) face up and are no more than 5 cm (2 inches) below the soil surface. Backfill the hole with dirt, gently firming it down to remove any air pockets. Thoroughly water the newly planted peony root to help settle the dirt around the roots. Soak the soil around the plant using a watering can or hose, being careful not to wash it away. Mulch the plant’s base with a 5 to 7.5 cm (2 to 3 inch) layer of organic mulch, such as shredded bark or straw.
