Characteristics

Paeonia ‘Out of Control’ doesn’t tiptoe into bloom—it arrives with unapologetic flair. Its semi-double flowers, ablaze in a peachy orange that deepens at the base, seem to smoulder against the foliage. No side buds to speak of, no distractions—each stem carries a single, focused bloom, perfectly balanced and unusually elegant. The stems hold their own, medium in height yet sturdy, ideal for structured borders or curated field rows. Blooming midseason with moderate productivity, this deluxe intersectional variety—introduced in 2018—offers a quiet confidence that seasoned growers recognise instantly.

Origin Out of Control Peony

‘Out of Control’ is rooted in the Itoh lineage—intersectional peonies born from the bold vision of Japanese breeder Toichi Itoh. Merging the reliability of herbaceous types with the stately flair of tree peonies, intersectionals have changed the landscape of peony cultivation. Their genetic precision results in compact plants, generous blooms, and exceptional disease resistance. It’s a peony engineered for consistency, yet full of character—everything the discerning grower didn’t know they needed.

INTERSECTIONAL

As part of this distinct category, ‘Out of Control’ exemplifies what makes Itoh peonies so sought-after: structural integrity, visual complexity, and a flowering period that bridges gaps in the perennial calendar. With its singular blooms—no side buds to dilute the show—this variety directs all energy into producing flowers of rare saturation and form. Landscapers and collectors alike will appreciate its predictable performance and decorative potential.

How to plant

What follows are the steps for planting Out of Control peony roots:
Peonies flourish in locations with plenty of sunlight and well-draining soil. Choose a location that receives at least six hours of sunlight every day and has organic-rich soil. Create a hole that is 30 cm (12 inches) broad and 10 cm (4 inches) deep. To boost soil fertility, loosen the soil at the bottom of the hole with a garden fork or spade and mix in some compost or well-rotted manure. Remove any stones or trash and break up any clumps. Insert the peony root into the hole so that the eyes (or growth buds) face up and are no more than 5 cm (2 inches) below the soil surface. Backfill the hole with dirt, gently firming it down to remove any air pockets. Thoroughly water the newly planted peony root to help settle the dirt around the roots. Soak the soil around the plant using a watering can or hose, being careful not to wash it away. Mulch the plant’s base with a 5 to 7.5 cm (2 to 3 inch) layer of organic mulch, such as shredded bark or straw.
