Characteristics

Paeonia ‘OLD ROSE DANDY’ is a visually distinctive intersectional cultivar with single-petalled flowers in a soft orange hue, accentuated by deep burgundy flares at the centre. Its understated elegance is matched by practical strength: normal stem length, side buds that support repeat blooming, and consistent productivity. Blooming mid-season and introduced in 1993, this variety has remained a reliable presence in both ornamental borders and professional growing systems.

Origin OLD ROSE DANDY Peony

‘OLD ROSE DANDY’ was introduced in 1993 as part of a new class of peonies that reshaped modern horticulture: the intersectionals. Combining the perennial reliability of herbaceous peonies with the woody strength and floral spectacle of tree peonies, this cultivar represents a significant advancement in peony hybridisation. Its soft-toned blooms with deep central flares reflect the subtle drama typical of this hybrid group, while its balanced growth habit makes it an enduring choice among growers.

Originally developed in the second half of the 20th century by Japanese breeder Toichi Itoh, intersectional peonies—also known as Itoh peonies—quickly gained international recognition for their robust stems, extended blooming period, and exceptional disease resistance. ‘OLD ROSE DANDY’ upholds this legacy with its dependable flowering performance and refined aesthetic, securing its place in both ornamental gardens and commercial plantings.

INTERSECTIONAL

Intersectional peonies are a cross between herbaceous and tree peonies, resulting in a hybrid that combines the best of both worlds. These cultivars are noted for their strong, upright stems, unique flower forms, and vigorous growth. As low-maintenance perennials, they are ideal for growers seeking structure, longevity, and visual impact without intensive care. This category is particularly well-suited for professional cultivation due to its extended vase life, high disease tolerance, and reliable field performance year after year.

How to plant

What follows are the steps for planting Old Rose Dandy peony roots:
Peonies flourish in locations with plenty of sunlight and well-draining soil. Choose a location that receives at least six hours of sunlight every day and has organic-rich soil. Create a hole that is 30 cm (12 inches) broad and 10 cm (4 inches) deep. To boost soil fertility, loosen the soil at the bottom of the hole with a garden fork or spade and mix in some compost or well-rotted manure. Remove any stones or trash and break up any clumps. Insert the peony root into the hole so that the eyes (or growth buds) face up and are no more than 5 cm (2 inches) below the soil surface. Backfill the hole with dirt, gently firming it down to remove any air pockets. Thoroughly water the newly planted peony root to help settle the dirt around the roots. Soak the soil around the plant using a watering can or hose, being careful not to wash it away. Mulch the plant’s base with a 5 to 7.5 cm (2 to 3 inch) layer of organic mulch, such as shredded bark or straw.
