Characteristics

Paeonia ‘Northwind Maiden’ is a hybrid peony that marries structural refinement with understated charm. Its loosely double blooms open in soft pink, then shift gently in tone as they age—never uniform, always engaging. Each flower spans about 15 cm across and sits atop a strong, upright stem that requires no staking. The plant reaches mid-height, with foliage that begins in reddish hues before settling into a cool-toned green. Though light in colour, its growth is anything but delicate: it’s vigorous, dependable, and ideal for early-season production.

Origin Northwind Maiden Peony

Discovered by Bill Seidl in Wisconsin and introduced by Seidl & Bremer in 2021, ‘Northwind Maiden’ was selected from a longstanding hybrid lineage. Likely related to ‘Manitowoc Maiden’, it shares that cultivar’s resilient garden form and graceful flowering. Despite its recent introduction, this peony has been cultivated in European collections since the 1970s, admired quietly by growers for its subtle complexity and field reliability.

HYBRID

As a hybrid peony, ‘Northwind Maiden’ reflects decades of crossbreeding designed to combine the strengths of multiple species. Hybrids are often valued for their early bloom times, strong stems, and reduced need for support—all qualities found in this cultivar. It is especially suited for growers seeking uniform growth and visually refined output without high maintenance.

How to plant

What follows are the steps for planting Northwind Maiden peony roots:
Peonies flourish in locations with plenty of sunlight and well-draining soil. Choose a location that receives at least six hours of sunlight every day and has organic-rich soil. Create a hole that is 30 cm (12 inches) broad and 10 cm (4 inches) deep. To boost soil fertility, loosen the soil at the bottom of the hole with a garden fork or spade and mix in some compost or well-rotted manure. Remove any stones or trash and break up any clumps. Insert the peony root into the hole so that the eyes (or growth buds) face up and are no more than 5 cm (2 inches) below the soil surface. Backfill the hole with dirt, gently firming it down to remove any air pockets. Thoroughly water the newly planted peony root to help settle the dirt around the roots. Soak the soil around the plant using a watering can or hose, being careful not to wash it away. Mulch the plant’s base with a 5 to 7.5 cm (2 to 3 inch) layer of organic mulch, such as shredded bark or straw.
