Characteristics

Paeonia ‘Mary Brand’ makes a vivid statement in the heart of the season — raspberry-pink, fully double, and built like a classic. The bloom opens in a tight dome, its layered petals unfolding in compact succession. What sets it apart is its rich colour: deeper than pink, warmer than red — a tone that holds against light and time. With strong productivity and reliable side buds, it delivers volume without fading into the crowd. This is a bloom that cuts clean, bunches fast, and always earns its keep.

Origin MARY BRAND Peony

Introduced in 1907 and still going strong, ‘Mary Brand’ is proof that quality never dates. Its colour, form and vigour remain relevant — even among newer cultivars. In a mid-season field dominated by blushes and whites, this variety holds the line with unapologetic depth. It’s a backbone bloomer: sturdy, productive, and unbothered by trends. For growers looking to anchor their mid-season blocks with something with history and impact, ‘Mary Brand’ is the right kind of reliable.

LACTIFLORA

As a lactiflora, ‘Mary Brand’ is remarkably forgiving. It pushes steadily, even in fluctuating temperatures, and rarely loses shape to rain or heat. Its side buds allow staggered picking, and at the grading table, its structure speaks for itself — clean centres, firm heads, and no fluff. In tight schedules and unpredictable weeks, this is the one that behaves.

How to plant

What follows are the steps for planting Mary Brand peony roots:
Peonies flourish in locations with plenty of sunlight and well-draining soil. Choose a location that receives at least six hours of sunlight every day and has organic-rich soil. Create a hole that is 30 cm (12 inches) broad and 10 cm (4 inches) deep. To boost soil fertility, loosen the soil at the bottom of the hole with a garden fork or spade and mix in some compost or well-rotted manure. Remove any stones or trash and break up any clumps. Insert the peony root into the hole so that the eyes (or growth buds) face up and are no more than 5 cm (2 inches) below the soil surface. Backfill the hole with dirt, gently firming it down to remove any air pockets. Thoroughly water the newly planted peony root to help settle the dirt around the roots. Soak the soil around the plant using a watering can or hose, being careful not to wash it away. Mulch the plant’s base with a 5 to 7.5 cm (2 to 3 inch) layer of organic mulch, such as shredded bark or straw.
