Characteristics

Paeonia ‘Madame de Verneville’ rises tall and structured, crowned with lush white double blooms softly flecked with pink at their core — as if brushed by a passing hand. The flowers are broad and densely built, yet they sit light on the stem, catching afternoon sun in a way that creates a ripple of brightness across the row. With very high productivity and well-formed side buds, this variety offers depth, rhythm, and reliable volume through the middle of the season. It is as visually theatrical as it is professionally consistent.

Origin MADAME DE VERNEVILLE Peony

First introduced in 1885, ‘Madame de Verneville’ hails from the early golden age of French peony breeding. It was developed for elegance and floral drama — and it has retained both. The subtle raspberry-pink streaks in its core are a signature trait, highly recognisable and often favoured by traditional floral designers. Its tall structure, vigour, and steady flowering make it more than a relic: this variety continues to meet modern cultivation standards with ease.

LACTIFLORA

Lactiflora peonies are known for their structured growth and reliable perennial cycles. ‘Madame de Verneville’ builds on this foundation with a taller-than-average posture and a pronounced bloom form. Its multiple buds and strong flowering response provide both ornamental beauty and high output. Whether used for heritage-driven landscaping or scaled mid-season production, this peony holds its own with confidence and clarity.

How to plant

What follows are the steps for planting Madame de Verneville peony roots:
Peonies flourish in locations with plenty of sunlight and well-draining soil. Choose a location that receives at least six hours of sunlight every day and has organic-rich soil. Create a hole that is 30 cm (12 inches) broad and 10 cm (4 inches) deep. To boost soil fertility, loosen the soil at the bottom of the hole with a garden fork or spade and mix in some compost or well-rotted manure. Remove any stones or trash and break up any clumps. Insert the peony root into the hole so that the eyes (or growth buds) face up and are no more than 5 cm (2 inches) below the soil surface. Backfill the hole with dirt, gently firming it down to remove any air pockets. Thoroughly water the newly planted peony root to help settle the dirt around the roots. Soak the soil around the plant using a watering can or hose, being careful not to wash it away. Mulch the plant’s base with a 5 to 7.5 cm (2 to 3 inch) layer of organic mulch, such as shredded bark or straw.
