Characteristics

Paeonia ‘Luxor’ opens mid-season with the commanding fullness of a classic — a dense, double white bloom with a texture reminiscent of finely pressed linen. Each flower is deeply packed yet perfectly contained, offering a structural harmony that reads as both ornamental and efficient. When grown in rows, the uniformity is striking: heads balanced, stems upright, and colour consistent across the bed. Side buds increase stem production without disrupting bloom shape, making ‘Luxor’ a reliable force in white peony output.

Origin LUXOR Peony

Introduced in 1933, ‘Luxor’ comes from a period in peony breeding where form, scale, and repeatability defined quality. Its lactiflora heritage is rooted in function — robust stems, field adaptability, and visual longevity. Over the decades, ‘Luxor’ has remained a benchmark for growers seeking a white peony that delivers volume without disorder, and presence without fragility. It’s not a showoff, but it always shows up.

LACTIFLORA

As a lactiflora peony, ‘Luxor’ offers dependable performance in a professional setting. The combination of strong side buds and a well-filled centre makes it ideal for mid-season field production, especially where clean lines and consistent stem output are key. Its height is manageable, the posture is tidy, and the overall aesthetic is one of composed strength — precisely what is needed in a cut-flower white.

How to plant

What follows are the steps for planting Luxor peony roots:
Peonies flourish in locations with plenty of sunlight and well-draining soil. Choose a location that receives at least six hours of sunlight every day and has organic-rich soil. Create a hole that is 30 cm (12 inches) broad and 10 cm (4 inches) deep. To boost soil fertility, loosen the soil at the bottom of the hole with a garden fork or spade and mix in some compost or well-rotted manure. Remove any stones or trash and break up any clumps. Insert the peony root into the hole so that the eyes (or growth buds) face up and are no more than 5 cm (2 inches) below the soil surface. Backfill the hole with dirt, gently firming it down to remove any air pockets. Thoroughly water the newly planted peony root to help settle the dirt around the roots. Soak the soil around the plant using a watering can or hose, being careful not to wash it away. Mulch the plant’s base with a 5 to 7.5 cm (2 to 3 inch) layer of organic mulch, such as shredded bark or straw.
