Characteristics

Paeonia ‘Lady Orchid’ opens with a poise that’s hard to overlook — a classic double flower in a muted pink, shaped like a cup gently cradling its own fullness. Its outer petals are smooth and broadly arranged, while the inner layers fold densely in a structure that holds up well under varying weather. Side buds offer a reliable succession of blooms, and its normal-length stems make for uniform field presentation. In late-season plots, ‘Lady Orchid’ performs with the calm assurance of a well-bred standard.

Origin LADY ORCHID Peony

Registered in 1942, ‘Lady Orchid’ stands as a quiet constant among lactiflora cultivars. This variety was developed in an era that favoured structure, symmetry, and predictable return — all traits it continues to deliver. With its late flowering profile, strong stems and side bud production, it offers growers both stability and gentle charm at a time when many early varieties have faded from the scene.

LACTIFLORA

Lactiflora peonies form the bedrock of traditional peony breeding, prized for their adaptability, reliability and multi-season resilience. ‘Lady Orchid’ exemplifies these traits with a balanced, upright posture and blooms that maintain their form well beyond opening. The consistent pink shade makes it suitable for both cut flower growers and landscape designers seeking even tonality and form repetition across planting areas.

How to plant

What follows are the steps for planting Lady Orchid peony roots:
Peonies flourish in locations with plenty of sunlight and well-draining soil. Choose a location that receives at least six hours of sunlight every day and has organic-rich soil. Create a hole that is 30 cm (12 inches) broad and 10 cm (4 inches) deep. To boost soil fertility, loosen the soil at the bottom of the hole with a garden fork or spade and mix in some compost or well-rotted manure. Remove any stones or trash and break up any clumps. Insert the peony root into the hole so that the eyes (or growth buds) face up and are no more than 5 cm (2 inches) below the soil surface. Backfill the hole with dirt, gently firming it down to remove any air pockets. Thoroughly water the newly planted peony root to help settle the dirt around the roots. Soak the soil around the plant using a watering can or hose, being careful not to wash it away. Mulch the plant’s base with a 5 to 7.5 cm (2 to 3 inch) layer of organic mulch, such as shredded bark or straw.
