Characteristics

Paeonia ‘La Perle’ carries the softness of its name in every bloom — rounded, double-layered, and shaded in tender pink. The flowers open with a pearlescent finish and a gentle dome structure that stands firm yet never overstated. Short in height and equipped with side buds, this late-season variety rewards growers with a steady yield across staggered blooms. In rows, its colour holds consistently, creating a calm, uninterrupted visual line that is particularly valued during the final harvest weeks.

Origin LA PERLE Peony

First registered in 1886, ‘La Perle’ is among the quiet workhorses of the lactiflora group. It emerged in a time when elegance and structure were prioritised over spectacle — and that sensibility remains. Its lineage stretches back to East Asian origins, where lactiflora types were selected for resilience, adaptability, and ornamental discipline. ‘La Perle’ maintains this balance: strong enough for open field conditions, yet refined enough for detailed floral work.

LACTIFLORA

Lactiflora peonies like ‘La Perle’ have become a mainstay in modern cultivation thanks to their combination of high output and ease of handling. With its double flower structure, responsive side buds, and compact stature, this variety is ideal for growers managing dense planting layouts or needing structure in late-season production. ‘La Perle’ is not simply attractive — it is dependable, efficient, and quietly precise.

How to plant

What follows are the steps for planting La Perle peony roots:
Peonies flourish in locations with plenty of sunlight and well-draining soil. Choose a location that receives at least six hours of sunlight every day and has organic-rich soil. Create a hole that is 30 cm (12 inches) broad and 10 cm (4 inches) deep. To boost soil fertility, loosen the soil at the bottom of the hole with a garden fork or spade and mix in some compost or well-rotted manure. Remove any stones or trash and break up any clumps. Insert the peony root into the hole so that the eyes (or growth buds) face up and are no more than 5 cm (2 inches) below the soil surface. Backfill the hole with dirt, gently firming it down to remove any air pockets. Thoroughly water the newly planted peony root to help settle the dirt around the roots. Soak the soil around the plant using a watering can or hose, being careful not to wash it away. Mulch the plant’s base with a 5 to 7.5 cm (2 to 3 inch) layer of organic mulch, such as shredded bark or straw.
