CHARACTERISTICS

Paeonia ‘Krinkled White’ delivers purity with character. This tall Lactiflora cultivar produces mid-season semi-double blooms with gently ruffled white petals that reveal a prominent golden-yellow centre. The contrast between petal and stamen is striking—resulting in a bloom that appears sculptural in morning light and architectural at scale. With no side buds, ‘Krinkled White’ concentrates its energy into singular flowers per stem, encouraging consistency in bloom quality and timing. Its open form makes it especially valuable for mixed-field plantings or floral programs seeking brightness and botanical clarity.

ORIGIN KRINKLED WHITE

First registered in 1928, ‘Krinkled White’ has maintained its relevance through decades of peony selection and field application. As part of the early 20th-century wave of structured Lactiflora breeding, it stood out for its unusual petal form and visual openness. Unlike densely packed doubles, this semi-double offers airiness and transparency—creating visual rhythm in planting rows or floral compositions. Its name, descriptive and enduring, reflects both the petal texture and the cultivar’s simplicity in structure and performance.

LACTIFLORA

Lactiflora cultivars such as ‘Krinkled White’ are the workhorses of modern peony production. Known for their fibrous root systems, upright carriage, and predictable bloom cycles, they adapt well to large-scale systems and seasonal rotation. This cultivar offers additional value through its clarity of colour, reduced petal density (allowing faster dry-down post-harvest), and its non-branching flowering pattern. It is particularly suited to growers who value uniformity, strong stem length, and an open-faced flower shape that enhances visual variety within a white palette.

How to plant

What follows are the steps for planting Krinkled White peony roots:
Peonies flourish in locations with plenty of sunlight and well-draining soil. Choose a location that receives at least six hours of sunlight every day and has organic-rich soil. Create a hole that is 30 cm (12 inches) broad and 10 cm (4 inches) deep. To boost soil fertility, loosen the soil at the bottom of the hole with a garden fork or spade and mix in some compost or well-rotted manure. Remove any stones or trash and break up any clumps. Insert the peony root into the hole so that the eyes (or growth buds) face up and are no more than 5 cm (2 inches) below the soil surface. Backfill the hole with dirt, gently firming it down to remove any air pockets. Thoroughly water the newly planted peony root to help settle the dirt around the roots. Soak the soil around the plant using a watering can or hose, being careful not to wash it away. Mulch the plant’s base with a 5 to 7.5 cm (2 to 3 inch) layer of organic mulch, such as shredded bark or straw.
