Characteristics

Paeonia ‘Katherine’ arrives late in the season — not hurried, not shy, but with the serene presence of something time-tested. Its double white blooms unfurl in silken layers, occasionally edged in the palest blush, like linen catching the last light. Growth is measured and reliable, with side buds offering a staggered rhythm to the flowering period. For professional growers, this variety provides both timing precision and the elegance of a classic form.

Origin KATHERINE Peony

Introduced over a century ago in 1909, ‘Katherine’ carries the quiet confidence of an heirloom. A representative of the lactiflora type, it traces back to East Asian origins, where peonies were cultivated not only for their floral architecture but also their resilience and adaptability. With its strong stems and late blooming window, ‘Katherine’ remains relevant in modern production systems — a reminder that time-tested genetics often outperform fleeting novelty.

LACTIFLORA

Lactiflora peonies are known for their longevity, structured flowering, and consistent performance across decades. ‘Katherine’ upholds this tradition with dignity. Its double flower form is well-supported by its normal-length stems, and the presence of side buds allows for a lengthened harvest or ornamental display period. Whether destined for cut flower use or landscaping, this variety integrates seamlessly into rotational field plans.

How to plant

What follows are the steps for planting Katherine peony roots:
Peonies flourish in locations with plenty of sunlight and well-draining soil. Choose a location that receives at least six hours of sunlight every day and has organic-rich soil. Create a hole that is 30 cm (12 inches) broad and 10 cm (4 inches) deep. To boost soil fertility, loosen the soil at the bottom of the hole with a garden fork or spade and mix in some compost or well-rotted manure. Remove any stones or trash and break up any clumps. Insert the peony root into the hole so that the eyes (or growth buds) face up and are no more than 5 cm (2 inches) below the soil surface. Backfill the hole with dirt, gently firming it down to remove any air pockets. Thoroughly water the newly planted peony root to help settle the dirt around the roots. Soak the soil around the plant using a watering can or hose, being careful not to wash it away. Mulch the plant’s base with a 5 to 7.5 cm (2 to 3 inch) layer of organic mulch, such as shredded bark or straw.
