Characteristics

Paeonia ‘Joyful Moon’ doesn’t glow—it radiates. This early-flowering hybrid opens in creamy yellow double blooms that appear almost lit from within. With tightly layered petals forming a broad, luminous sphere, each flower balances weight and elegance on a single strong stem. Grown to a uniform, medium height with no side buds, Joyful Moon delivers high productivity and clean structure across the crop. Its compact bloom shape and striking colour lend themselves to premium cut flower use, while the plant’s consistency makes it equally valuable in controlled cultivation. Introduced in 2019, this variety offers the steadiness growers depend on, with the rare softness of a yellow that never shouts.

Origin Joyful Moon Peony

Joyful Moon was introduced by Anderson of Swenson Gardens as part of a refined series of hybrids focused on early emergence and strong floral form. Its lactiflora ancestry provides petal fullness and visual richness, while hybrid strength ensures predictable growth, weather resilience, and efficient harvest cycles. Bred for professionals, Joyful Moon has quickly earned its place among premium cultivars that balance market appeal with horticultural discipline.

HYBRID

Hybrid peonies like Joyful Moon are developed to raise the bar on structural reliability, flower form, and timing. Compared to lactiflora types, hybrids offer earlier flowering, sturdier stems, and reduced susceptibility to disease or weather damage. With no side buds, upright habit, and minimal maintenance requirements, Joyful Moon is a textbook example of what a professional-grade hybrid should deliver.

How to plant

What follows are the steps for planting Joyful Moon peony roots:
Peonies flourish in locations with plenty of sunlight and well-draining soil. Choose a location that receives at least six hours of sunlight every day and has organic-rich soil. Create a hole that is 30 cm (12 inches) broad and 10 cm (4 inches) deep. To boost soil fertility, loosen the soil at the bottom of the hole with a garden fork or spade and mix in some compost or well-rotted manure. Remove any stones or trash and break up any clumps. Insert the peony root into the hole so that the eyes (or growth buds) face up and are no more than 5 cm (2 inches) below the soil surface. Backfill the hole with dirt, gently firming it down to remove any air pockets. Thoroughly water the newly planted peony root to help settle the dirt around the roots. Soak the soil around the plant using a watering can or hose, being careful not to wash it away. Mulch the plant’s base with a 5 to 7.5 cm (2 to 3 inch) layer of organic mulch, such as shredded bark or straw.
