Characteristics

Paeonia ‘Joyful Desire’ is a study in contrast—restrained form, radiant colour. This early-blooming hybrid features semi-double flowers in a pale yellow hue that softens at the edges while warming toward the centre, where vibrant golden stamens radiate through a whisper of pink-tipped filaments. Each bloom is perched on a strong, upright stem of consistent, medium height. With no side buds and high productivity, Joyful Desire offers clean lines and dependable structure for growers focused on harvest efficiency. Introduced in 2019 and classified as a premium variety, it is well-suited to professional cut flower cultivation, greenhouse production, or landscape schemes where a refined yellow palette is desired.

Origin Joyful Desire Peony

Bred by Anderson of Swenson Gardens and introduced in 2019, Joyful Desire merges traditional elegance with modern production clarity. Its hybrid vigour ensures early emergence, stem strength, and bloom regularity, while its lactiflora influence contributes to the classic semi-double form. This is a cultivar built for consistency across seasons—equally at ease in open fields or controlled environments. Joyful Desire doesn’t chase attention; it earns it through discipline, colour balance, and production ease.

HYBRID

Hybrid peonies are intentionally bred to refine critical traits—stronger stems, early flowering, and lower maintenance. Joyful Desire exemplifies this approach: tidy growth habit, reliable stem length, and resilience under variable weather. These qualities make hybrids indispensable for commercial growers who require both floral quality and operational efficiency from each plant.

How to plant

What follows are the steps for planting Joyful Desire peony roots:
Peonies flourish in locations with plenty of sunlight and well-draining soil. Choose a location that receives at least six hours of sunlight every day and has organic-rich soil. Create a hole that is 30 cm (12 inches) broad and 10 cm (4 inches) deep. To boost soil fertility, loosen the soil at the bottom of the hole with a garden fork or spade and mix in some compost or well-rotted manure. Remove any stones or trash and break up any clumps. Insert the peony root into the hole so that the eyes (or growth buds) face up and are no more than 5 cm (2 inches) below the soil surface. Backfill the hole with dirt, gently firming it down to remove any air pockets. Thoroughly water the newly planted peony root to help settle the dirt around the roots. Soak the soil around the plant using a watering can or hose, being careful not to wash it away. Mulch the plant’s base with a 5 to 7.5 cm (2 to 3 inch) layer of organic mulch, such as shredded bark or straw.
