Characteristics

Paeonia ‘Joyful Beginning’ ushers in the blooming season with a poised elegance that’s hard to overlook. Its semi-double blossoms, rendered in subdued apricot-blush, open with early precision — each one framed by rounded outer petals and a tucked-in heart of smaller, ruffled centres. This peony, standing at roughly 75 cm, is not one for theatrics; its strength lies in restraint and structural integrity. It produces single blooms per stem, making it a reliable asset for early-season cut flower operations. A notable fragrance lifts from the plant with a clarity that lingers, refined and floral without being overbearing.

Origin Joyful Beginning Peony

Registered in 2019 by Swenson Gardens, ‘Joyful Beginning’ is the outcome of contemporary hybridisation with roots in traditional lactiflora breeding. Designed for consistency and visual clarity, this peony fits seamlessly into both large-scale cultivation and curated collections. Its early emergence, coupled with structural resilience, makes it an indispensable entry in the modern grower’s repertoire.

HYBRID

Hybrid peonies are no accident of nature — they are carefully composed. ‘Joyful Beginning’ reflects the breeder’s intent to balance ornamental form with agronomic reliability. By crossing select peony species, this cultivar exhibits the early blooming traits of non-lactiflora lines with the classic appeal of the common garden peony. The result is a cultivar engineered for growers who value timing, clarity, and horticultural control.

How to plant

What follows are the steps for planting Joyful Beginning peony roots:
Peonies flourish in locations with plenty of sunlight and well-draining soil. Choose a location that receives at least six hours of sunlight every day and has organic-rich soil. Create a hole that is 30 cm (12 inches) broad and 10 cm (4 inches) deep. To boost soil fertility, loosen the soil at the bottom of the hole with a garden fork or spade and mix in some compost or well-rotted manure. Remove any stones or trash and break up any clumps. Insert the peony root into the hole so that the eyes (or growth buds) face up and are no more than 5 cm (2 inches) below the soil surface. Backfill the hole with dirt, gently firming it down to remove any air pockets. Thoroughly water the newly planted peony root to help settle the dirt around the roots. Soak the soil around the plant using a watering can or hose, being careful not to wash it away. Mulch the plant’s base with a 5 to 7.5 cm (2 to 3 inch) layer of organic mulch, such as shredded bark or straw.
