Characteristics

Paeonia ‘Heavenly Tower’ is a cultivar that doesn’t merely bloom—it composes itself with architectural precision. Each flower, single to semi-double in form, unveils cream-white petals lightly brushed with pink, edges ruffled like silk caught in motion. Measuring 13 to 15 centimetres across, these blooms emerge individually per stem, held firm by upright stalks that do not waver. Rising to a mature height of 85 cm, the plant maintains a clear silhouette throughout its early to midseason flowering. Though scentless, its strength lies in structure—built not to seduce, but to endure. Ideal for cut flower use, it balances beauty with practical resilience.

Origin Heavenly Tower

Introduced in 2018 by Roger Anderson in collaboration with Swenson Gardens, ‘Heavenly Tower’ is the result of a decade-long refinement. First seen in bloom in 2013, this selection emerged from a lineage focused on garden performance and form clarity. It reflects a shift in modern breeding: not toward extravagance, but toward efficiency and elegance, tightly bound in every bloom it presents.

HYBRID

As a hybrid, ‘Heavenly Tower’ benefits from deliberate parentage. Unlike its lactiflora cousins, this variety boasts earlier bloom times and reduced maintenance demands. Its hybrid vigour ensures both reliable field performance and compatibility with commercial schedules. No side buds, no distractions—each stem carries one carefully curated moment. Growers value it for its uniformity; designers for its clean lines.

How to plant

What follows are the steps for planting Heavenly Tower peony roots:
Peonies flourish in locations with plenty of sunlight and well-draining soil. Choose a location that receives at least six hours of sunlight every day and has organic-rich soil. Create a hole that is 30 cm (12 inches) broad and 10 cm (4 inches) deep. To boost soil fertility, loosen the soil at the bottom of the hole with a garden fork or spade and mix in some compost or well-rotted manure. Remove any stones or trash and break up any clumps. Insert the peony root into the hole so that the eyes (or growth buds) face up and are no more than 5 cm (2 inches) below the soil surface. Backfill the hole with dirt, gently firming it down to remove any air pockets. Thoroughly water the newly planted peony root to help settle the dirt around the roots. Soak the soil around the plant using a watering can or hose, being careful not to wash it away. Mulch the plant’s base with a 5 to 7.5 cm (2 to 3 inch) layer of organic mulch, such as shredded bark or straw.
