Characteristics

Paeonia ‘Green Monster’ defies expectations — not with volume, but with detail. Its semi-double to full double blooms unveil a pale ivory canvas, streaked unpredictably with fresh green, like a botanical ink wash. Each flower, spanning up to 20 centimetres, holds itself upright on stems that need no assistance, rising to around a metre in height. Flowering midseason, this cultivar makes a deliberate entrance — late enough to surprise, early enough to lead. In the field, it behaves with calm precision. In the vase, it intrigues. And for growers seeking more than mere conformity, that’s exactly the point.

Origin Green Monster Peony

Released by Swenson Gardens in 2021, ‘Green Monster’ is a modern hybrid — born of careful selection rather than accident. Hybrid peonies represent a lineage of horticultural intent: breeders crossing species to unite colour, form, resilience, and bloom timing in one reliable package. This cultivar is no exception. Its green-marked petals may raise eyebrows, but its growth habit, productivity, and strength make it a cultivator’s ally, not just a collector’s curiosity.

HYBRID

Hybrid peonies are the result of purposeful innovation. While traditional lactifloras offer elegance and dependability, hybrids stretch the boundaries — blooming earlier, with bolder structures and often greater disease resistance. Their heritage spans continents and centuries, from imperial China to modern breeding programmes in the U.S. and Japan. ‘Green Monster’ earns its place among them: unorthodox in bloom, but rooted in proven horticultural logic. It is a cultivar that looks unusual, but grows like it belongs.

How to plant

What follows are the steps for planting Green Monster peony roots:
Peonies flourish in locations with plenty of sunlight and well-draining soil. Choose a location that receives at least six hours of sunlight every day and has organic-rich soil. Create a hole that is 30 cm (12 inches) broad and 10 cm (4 inches) deep. To boost soil fertility, loosen the soil at the bottom of the hole with a garden fork or spade and mix in some compost or well-rotted manure. Remove any stones or trash and break up any clumps. Insert the peony root into the hole so that the eyes (or growth buds) face up and are no more than 5 cm (2 inches) below the soil surface. Backfill the hole with dirt, gently firming it down to remove any air pockets. Thoroughly water the newly planted peony root to help settle the dirt around the roots. Soak the soil around the plant using a watering can or hose, being careful not to wash it away. Mulch the plant’s base with a 5 to 7.5 cm (2 to 3 inch) layer of organic mulch, such as shredded bark or straw.
