Characteristics

Paeonia ‘GOING BANANAS’ doesn’t merely bloom — it stages a quiet revolution. With its pale yellow, semi-double flowers tinged with a flush of rosy coral at the base, this intersectional variety commands attention not through drama, but through refined balance. It stands upright and proud at around 70 cm, framed by sturdy stems and a disciplined crown of deep green foliage. Side buds emerge like echoes, offering a subtle reprise to its main performance. Though not overly fragrant, its presence in the garden is one of confident calm — steady, elegant, and unmistakably cultivated.

Origin GOING BANANAS Peony

Introduced in 2021, GOING BANANAS is part of the intersectional peony class — the botanical middle ground where the strength of herbaceous peonies meets the grandeur of tree varieties. This hybrid owes its lineage to the persistent work of Toichi Itoh, who crossed species lines to achieve something altogether more resilient, floriferous, and horticulturally refined. GOING BANANAS honours that legacy with aplomb, offering growers a structurally sound, disease-resistant peony with a bloom cycle that holds its own against more established cultivars.

INTERSECTIONAL

Intersectional peonies, or Itohs, offer something rare in modern cultivation: elegance without fragility. Their sturdy architecture and fibrous roots allow for dependable flowering, while their hybrid vigour translates into minimal maintenance and a blooming season that stretches longer than most. GOING BANANAS, with its softly yellow palette and composed silhouette, is especially well-suited to landscape designs that require rhythm and contrast — whether as a focal specimen or harmonising backdrop.

How to plant

What follows are the steps for planting Going Bananas peony roots:
Peonies flourish in locations with plenty of sunlight and well-draining soil. Choose a location that receives at least six hours of sunlight every day and has organic-rich soil. Create a hole that is 30 cm (12 inches) broad and 10 cm (4 inches) deep. To boost soil fertility, loosen the soil at the bottom of the hole with a garden fork or spade and mix in some compost or well-rotted manure. Remove any stones or trash and break up any clumps. Insert the peony root into the hole so that the eyes (or growth buds) face up and are no more than 5 cm (2 inches) below the soil surface. Backfill the hole with dirt, gently firming it down to remove any air pockets. Thoroughly water the newly planted peony root to help settle the dirt around the roots. Soak the soil around the plant using a watering can or hose, being careful not to wash it away. Mulch the plant’s base with a 5 to 7.5 cm (2 to 3 inch) layer of organic mulch, such as shredded bark or straw.
