CHARACTERISTICS

Paeonia ‘Edulis Superba’ is a cultivar of enduring legacy and ornamental volume. This tall Lactiflora selection offers late-season double blooms in saturated pink, with densely layered inner petals framed by broader outer guards—producing a floral form that is both textured and uniform. Its reliable side bud development allows for staggered flowering along the stem, extending harvest duration. With upright stems and strong vegetative balance, ‘Edulis Superba’ remains a functional and visually consistent asset for large-scale planting schemes, historic collections, or commercial programs requiring predictable flowering behaviour.

ORIGIN EDULIS SUPERBA

First documented in 1824, ‘Edulis Superba’ stands among the earliest named Lactiflora cultivars. Originating from a period of early 19th-century breeding in Europe, it reflects the foundational phase of peony domestication—when form, colour saturation, and flowering reliability became central breeding goals. Its name, referencing both edibility and excellence, speaks to the period’s botanical traditions. Nearly two centuries later, ‘Edulis Superba’ continues to be cultivated across continents, valued for its floral density, adaptability, and historical significance.

LACTIFLORA

Lactiflora peonies are characterised by their fibrous roots, long flowering stems, and consistent bud structure. As a type, they form the core of professional peony cultivation due to their scalability and performance in varied climates. ‘Edulis Superba’, though historic, exemplifies these practical traits: tall stature, responsive side buds, and dependable productivity under standard field conditions. Its bloom format, with its dense, pom-pom-like centre, also adds decorative value for late-flowering schedules.

How to plant

What follows are the steps for planting Edulis Superba peony roots:
Peonies flourish in locations with plenty of sunlight and well-draining soil. Choose a location that receives at least six hours of sunlight every day and has organic-rich soil. Create a hole that is 30 cm (12 inches) broad and 10 cm (4 inches) deep. To boost soil fertility, loosen the soil at the bottom of the hole with a garden fork or spade and mix in some compost or well-rotted manure. Remove any stones or trash and break up any clumps. Insert the peony root into the hole so that the eyes (or growth buds) face up and are no more than 5 cm (2 inches) below the soil surface. Backfill the hole with dirt, gently firming it down to remove any air pockets. Thoroughly water the newly planted peony root to help settle the dirt around the roots. Soak the soil around the plant using a watering can or hose, being careful not to wash it away. Mulch the plant’s base with a 5 to 7.5 cm (2 to 3 inch) layer of organic mulch, such as shredded bark or straw.
