Characteristics

Paeonia ‘Early Sensation’ signals the season’s turning point with confident clarity. Its semi-double blooms in vivid pink unfurl just as other varieties still slumber, giving commercial growers a valuable head start. This hybrid cultivar, reaching 60 cm in stem length, combines aesthetic appeal with production logic: few side buds for streamlined harvesting, high productivity for consistent yields. Whether for protected cultivation or open-field cut flower production, ‘Early Sensation’ offers both visual impact and operational efficiency.

Origin of Early Sensation Peony

Since its introduction in 1999, ‘Early Sensation’ has established itself as a dependable workhorse in the early hybrid segment. Developed through cross-species breeding, it reflects decades of genetic refinement aimed at combining floricultural performance with horticultural resilience. The result is a plant that doesn’t just bloom early—it does so with discipline, delivering uniform stems and striking colour long before the bulk of the market wakes up.

HYBRID

Hybrid peonies like ‘Early Sensation’ are the product of sustained innovation. Merging the compact durability of herbaceous types with the structural advantages of tree peonies, this group is prized for traits that matter to growers: early flowering, robust stems, and minimal maintenance. Their value lies not in extravagance but in precision—and this variety is a textbook example.

How to plant

What follows are the steps for planting Early Sensation peony roots:
Peonies flourish in locations with plenty of sunlight and well-draining soil. Choose a location that receives at least six hours of sunlight every day and has organic-rich soil. Create a hole that is 30 cm (12 inches) broad and 10 cm (4 inches) deep. To boost soil fertility, loosen the soil at the bottom of the hole with a garden fork or spade and mix in some compost or well-rotted manure. Remove any stones or trash and break up any clumps. Insert the peony root into the hole so that the eyes (or growth buds) face up and are no more than 5 cm (2 inches) below the soil surface. Backfill the hole with dirt, gently firming it down to remove any air pockets. Thoroughly water the newly planted peony root to help settle the dirt around the roots. Soak the soil around the plant using a watering can or hose, being careful not to wash it away. Mulch the plant’s base with a 5 to 7.5 cm (2 to 3 inch) layer of organic mulch, such as shredded bark or straw.
