Characteristics

Paeonia ‘Early Canary’ ushers in the peony season with remarkable punctuality and purpose. Its soft yellow, semi-double blooms appear as early as the season allows, delivering clarity and freshness when the landscape is still wiping sleep from its eyes. With a growth height of 55 cm and few side buds, this cultivar is designed for precision: ideal for cut flower production where uniformity, timing, and quality are paramount. Its productivity is high, yet its maintenance remains low—an efficient choice for both field growers and greenhouse operations.

Origin Early Canary Peony

Bred in 1991, ‘Early Canary’ stems from the hybrid class of peonies—varieties known for their vigour, early bloom cycles, and structural resilience. Hybrids emerged through deliberate crossbreeding between species such as Paeonia lactiflora and Paeonia officinalis, merging ornamental beauty with horticultural reliability. ‘Early Canary’ carries this lineage forward with subtle poise: a pale yellow bloom that speaks volumes without theatrics. It stands as a fine example of what hybridisation can achieve when elegance and function meet.

HYBRID

Hybrid peonies mark a turning point in peony cultivation. Developed through extensive breeding efforts in Europe, the US, and Japan, these cultivars exhibit early flowering times, strong stems, and a broad colour range. ‘Early Canary’ is no exception—combining the durability of herbaceous peonies with the structural grace often seen in tree types. It is a cultivar tailored to meet the practical needs of professionals while pleasing the discerning eye of collectors.

How to plant

What follows are the steps for planting Early Canary peony roots:
Peonies flourish in locations with plenty of sunlight and well-draining soil. Choose a location that receives at least six hours of sunlight every day and has organic-rich soil. Create a hole that is 30 cm (12 inches) broad and 10 cm (4 inches) deep. To boost soil fertility, loosen the soil at the bottom of the hole with a garden fork or spade and mix in some compost or well-rotted manure. Remove any stones or trash and break up any clumps. Insert the peony root into the hole so that the eyes (or growth buds) face up and are no more than 5 cm (2 inches) below the soil surface. Backfill the hole with dirt, gently firming it down to remove any air pockets. Thoroughly water the newly planted peony root to help settle the dirt around the roots. Soak the soil around the plant using a watering can or hose, being careful not to wash it away. Mulch the plant’s base with a 5 to 7.5 cm (2 to 3 inch) layer of organic mulch, such as shredded bark or straw.
