CHARACTERISTICS

Paeonia ‘Dianne’ offers a late-season flourish with deliberate elegance. This tall Lactiflora cultivar produces double pink blooms with a sculpted, silken texture—each flower opening in tight succession along stems supported by structured foliage and visible side buds. Its height provides vertical rhythm within the field, while the bloom’s tonal softness and intricate layering speak to its ornamental refinement. ‘Dianne’ holds form under varying conditions, delivering steady productivity and uniformity—a quality appreciated in both commercial and high-end landscape contexts.

ORIGIN DIANNE PEONY

First introduced in 1948, ‘Dianne’ emerged during a period of focused Lactiflora breeding when post-war horticulture prioritised resilience, aesthetic value, and propagation potential. Its parentage is rooted in the East Asian heritage of the Lactiflora species, refined in the West for garden and commercial performance. ‘Dianne’ remains faithful to that lineage—tall, structured, and predictably productive—with characteristics that have secured its place in the deluxe category over decades of cultivation.

LACTIFLORA

Lactiflora peonies form the backbone of herbaceous peony production worldwide. Known for their fibrous roots, clear flowering periods, and adaptability, they offer a foundation of dependability in both field and garden applications. ‘Dianne’, with its tall habit, late bloom time and side bud development, exemplifies the genetic strengths of the group: extended blooming, stem integrity, and market-ready flower form. This cultivar integrates seamlessly into rotational growing schemes that prioritise timing, structure, and visual consistency.

How to plant

What follows are the steps for planting Dianne peony roots:
Peonies flourish in locations with plenty of sunlight and well-draining soil. Choose a location that receives at least six hours of sunlight every day and has organic-rich soil. Create a hole that is 30 cm (12 inches) broad and 10 cm (4 inches) deep. To boost soil fertility, loosen the soil at the bottom of the hole with a garden fork or spade and mix in some compost or well-rotted manure. Remove any stones or trash and break up any clumps. Insert the peony root into the hole so that the eyes (or growth buds) face up and are no more than 5 cm (2 inches) below the soil surface. Backfill the hole with dirt, gently firming it down to remove any air pockets. Thoroughly water the newly planted peony root to help settle the dirt around the roots. Soak the soil around the plant using a watering can or hose, being careful not to wash it away. Mulch the plant’s base with a 5 to 7.5 cm (2 to 3 inch) layer of organic mulch, such as shredded bark or straw.
