Characteristics

Paeonia Intersectional ‘Chief Black Hawk’ is a cultivar that does not blend in — it asserts itself. With its dark red, semi-double blooms opening in midseason, it brings a rich, velvety depth to any planting scheme. The petals ripple with texture, surrounding golden stamens that shimmer like embers against a crimson sky. Supported by sturdy stems and accompanied by reliable side buds, this peony offers not only presence but performance. Moderate in productivity and standard in height, it is a dependable choice for growers seeking impact without excess.

Origin Chief Black Hawk Peony

The ‘Chief Black Hawk’ was introduced in 2008 and belongs to the intersectional category — a horticultural breakthrough born from decades of botanical ambition.

INTERSECTIONAL

Developed in the 20th century by Japanese breeder Toichi Itoh, intersectional peonies represent a fusion between herbaceous and tree peonies. After years of experimentation, Itoh succeeded in combining the resilient structure of herbaceous peonies with the commanding blooms of their woody counterparts. The result: plants that are vigorous yet refined, compact yet expansive in display.
‘Chief Black Hawk’ follows this lineage with confidence. Its flowers inherit the structural poise of tree peonies, yet its root system and growing habit echo the reliability of traditional herbaceous varieties. For growers, it’s not just a visual choice—it’s a strategic one.

How to plant

What follows are the steps for planting Chief Black Hawk peony roots:
Peonies flourish in locations with plenty of sunlight and well-draining soil. Choose a location that receives at least six hours of sunlight every day and has organic-rich soil. Create a hole that is 30 cm (12 inches) broad and 10 cm (4 inches) deep. To boost soil fertility, loosen the soil at the bottom of the hole with a garden fork or spade and mix in some compost or well-rotted manure. Remove any stones or trash and break up any clumps. Insert the peony root into the hole so that the eyes (or growth buds) face up and are no more than 5 cm (2 inches) below the soil surface. Backfill the hole with dirt, gently firming it down to remove any air pockets. Thoroughly water the newly planted peony root to help settle the dirt around the roots. Soak the soil around the plant using a watering can or hose, being careful not to wash it away. Mulch the plant’s base with a 5 to 7.5 cm (2 to 3 inch) layer of organic mulch, such as shredded bark or straw.
