Characteristics

Paeonia Lactiflora Chestine Gowdy delivers classic structure with a twist of contrast. The bomb-type bloom opens with vivid rose-pink guard petals that encircle a domed centre of ivory-white — a floral architecture that seems drawn from a bygone botanical illustration. At approximately 90 cm in height, this cultivar is balanced and upright, with stem strength that suits both ornamental gardens and commercial cut flower rows. Blooming in the mid-to-late season, Chestine Gowdy brings a steady, elegant rhythm to the peony harvest calendar.

Origin Chestine Gowdy Peony

As a member of the Paeonia lactiflora species, Chestine Gowdy traces its roots to East Asian flora, refined through generations of American selection. Introduced in the early 20th century, this variety exemplifies the goal of early hybridisers: dependable bloom production, enhanced form, and suitability for temperate field conditions. Its enduring presence in peony catalogues is a testament to its cultivation value and visual distinction.

LACTIFLORA

Lactiflora peonies form the backbone of herbaceous peony breeding. Their predictability in structure, fragrance, and field longevity has secured them a permanent role in large-scale horticulture. Chestine Gowdy belongs to this lineage, yet distinguishes itself through its pronounced colour contrast and architectural flower shape. The bomb-type bloom, with its built-in drama, elevates both landscape designs and cut flower arrangements with minimal intervention and maximum return.

How to plant

What follows are the steps for planting Chestine Gowdy peony roots:
Peonies flourish in locations with plenty of sunlight and well-draining soil. Choose a location that receives at least six hours of sunlight every day and has organic-rich soil. Create a hole that is 30 cm (12 inches) broad and 10 cm (4 inches) deep. To boost soil fertility, loosen the soil at the bottom of the hole with a garden fork or spade and mix in some compost or well-rotted manure. Remove any stones or trash and break up any clumps. Insert the peony root into the hole so that the eyes (or growth buds) face up and are no more than 5 cm (2 inches) below the soil surface. Backfill the hole with dirt, gently firming it down to remove any air pockets. Thoroughly water the newly planted peony root to help settle the dirt around the roots. Soak the soil around the plant using a watering can or hose, being careful not to wash it away. Mulch the plant’s base with a 5 to 7.5 cm (2 to 3 inch) layer of organic mulch, such as shredded bark or straw.
