Characteristics

Paeonia hybrid ‘Cat Whiskers’ doesn’t bloom—it sketches. With semi-double flowers in soft cream to pale blush, each bloom feels drawn rather than grown, delicately framed by fine, arching stamens that dart outward like the flick of a curious tail. The form is loose yet deliberate, airy but anchored—offering a bloom that feels in motion even at rest. Reaching 85 cm in height, this early-season hybrid balances upright strength with botanical nuance. Perfect for growers and designers looking to work with texture, space, and suggestion.

Origin Cat Whiskers Peony

‘Cat Whiskers’ is the product of modern hybrid breeding, where form isn’t just inherited—it’s designed. Likely descended from lactiflora and other herbaceous progenitors, this cultivar was selected for its playful floral structure and practical field performance. Its name speaks to its signature trait: those prominent, expressive stamens that give the flower an animated presence. A novelty in both bloom type and visual rhythm, it adds lightness without losing credibility.

HYBRID

Hybrid peonies such as ‘Cat Whiskers’ are less about abundance and more about articulation. While many hybrids chase density, this one explores silhouette—an open bloom with non-traditional stamen architecture that invites closer observation. It is well-suited for florists seeking point-of-difference varieties, or growers wanting early-season diversity with visual lift and clean foliage.

How to plant

What follows are the steps for planting Cat Whikers peony roots:
Peonies flourish in locations with plenty of sunlight and well-draining soil. Choose a location that receives at least six hours of sunlight every day and has organic-rich soil. Create a hole that is 30 cm (12 inches) broad and 10 cm (4 inches) deep. To boost soil fertility, loosen the soil at the bottom of the hole with a garden fork or spade and mix in some compost or well-rotted manure. Remove any stones or trash and break up any clumps. Insert the peony root into the hole so that the eyes (or growth buds) face up and are no more than 5 cm (2 inches) below the soil surface. Backfill the hole with dirt, gently firming it down to remove any air pockets. Thoroughly water the newly planted peony root to help settle the dirt around the roots. Soak the soil around the plant using a watering can or hose, being careful not to wash it away. Mulch the plant’s base with a 5 to 7.5 cm (2 to 3 inch) layer of organic mulch, such as shredded bark or straw.
