Characteristics

Paeonia hybrid ‘Bad Hair Day’ is as unruly as it is unforgettable. Its large, creamy-yellow blooms burst open in a deliberate disarray of curled and crimped petals—more performance than perfection. Like a floral protest against symmetry, each flower appears whipped by wind, yet held aloft by strong, reliable stems. Reaching 85 cm in height, this early bloomer adds a touch of irreverence to structured borders and bouquet lines that could use a bit of mischief.

Origin Bad Hair Day Peony

‘Bad Hair Day’ is a contemporary hybrid with roots in experimental breeding programmes that favour bold structure over classical form. Though relatively new to the market, it’s already turning heads in fields and shows alike. Derived from hardy herbaceous parents, this cultivar inherits their reliable growth, while introducing a floral form that flirts with the avant-garde. It’s a standout among collectors, designers, and growers seeking a bit of theatre.

HYBRID

Hybrids like ‘Bad Hair Day’ aren’t made to conform. They bloom early, hold firm in the wind, and often challenge the norms of flower form. This cultivar brings all the hallmarks of the group—vigorous growth, strong stems, dependable health—but delivers them with unexpected flair. Perfect for cut flower production aimed at the novelty market, or as a conversation-starter in bold perennial plantings.

How to plant

What follows are the steps for planting Bad Hair Day peony roots:
Peonies flourish in locations with plenty of sunlight and well-draining soil. Choose a location that receives at least six hours of sunlight every day and has organic-rich soil. Create a hole that is 30 cm (12 inches) broad and 10 cm (4 inches) deep. To boost soil fertility, loosen the soil at the bottom of the hole with a garden fork or spade and mix in some compost or well-rotted manure. Remove any stones or trash and break up any clumps. Insert the peony root into the hole so that the eyes (or growth buds) face up and are no more than 5 cm (2 inches) below the soil surface. Backfill the hole with dirt, gently firming it down to remove any air pockets. Thoroughly water the newly planted peony root to help settle the dirt around the roots. Soak the soil around the plant using a watering can or hose, being careful not to wash it away. Mulch the plant’s base with a 5 to 7.5 cm (2 to 3 inch) layer of organic mulch, such as shredded bark or straw.
