Characteristics

Paeonia ‘Adonis’ offers a composed grandeur. This tall Lactiflora cultivar produces richly double flowers in refined shades of medium pink, each bloom arranged with botanical precision. Beneath the petals, firm stems and healthy green foliage anchor the plant with quiet strength. With mid-season bloom timing and reliable side buds, ‘Adonis’ performs with an understated consistency that seasoned growers recognise — and respect.

Origin ADONIS PEONY

First introduced in 1930, ‘Adonis’ belongs to the classic Lactiflora lineage. These peonies — native to Eastern Asia — have been refined over centuries for structure, longevity, and ornamental value. ‘Adonis’ fits firmly within that tradition: a deluxe category peony with strong commercial value and enduring visual appeal. Its reputation has been earned in both professional cut flower production and landscaped borders where structure and bloom count matter.

LACTIFLORA

Lactiflora peonies are the standard-bearers of the herbaceous class. Known for dependable productivity, elegant foliage, and excellent vase performance, they are a cornerstone of professional cultivation. ‘Adonis’, with its generous side buds and robust length, exemplifies the strengths of the group — dependable, scalable, and timeless in use.

How to plant

What follows are the steps for planting Adonis peony roots:
Peonies flourish in locations with plenty of sunlight and well-draining soil. Choose a location that receives at least six hours of sunlight every day and has organic-rich soil. Create a hole that is 30 cm (12 inches) broad and 10 cm (4 inches) deep. To boost soil fertility, loosen the soil at the bottom of the hole with a garden fork or spade and mix in some compost or well-rotted manure. Remove any stones or trash and break up any clumps. Insert the peony root into the hole so that the eyes (or growth buds) face up and are no more than 5 cm (2 inches) below the soil surface. Backfill the hole with dirt, gently firming it down to remove any air pockets. Thoroughly water the newly planted peony root to help settle the dirt around the roots. Soak the soil around the plant using a watering can or hose, being careful not to wash it away. Mulch the plant’s base with a 5 to 7.5 cm (2 to 3 inch) layer of organic mulch, such as shredded bark or straw.
