Characteristics

Paeonia lactiflora ‘Albert Crousse’ is a refined, late-blooming peony cultivar recognised for its softly ruffled, pale pink blossoms that gradually fade to near white. The fully double blooms exhibit a harmonious round form, paired with a sweet, classic fragrance that contributes to its long-standing popularity among collectors and growers alike. Reaching approximately 90 cm in height, this variety offers sturdy stems and reliable performance, making it particularly well-suited for both perennial borders and professional cut flower cultivation.

Origin Albert Crousse Peony

Bred in France in the late 19th century by the renowned peony breeder Louis Crousse, the ‘Albert Crousse’ cultivar is a testament to the golden age of European peony hybridisation. It belongs to the Paeonia lactiflora group—commonly referred to as the Chinese peony—which originates from East Asia and has been cultivated for centuries for both ornamental and medicinal purposes. This cultivar stands out for its romantic bloom form and rich olfactory appeal, maintaining a consistent presence in traditional gardens and commercial production fields.

LACTIFLORA

Lactiflora peonies are herbaceous perennials known for their prolific flowering, resilience, and suitability for temperate climates. As one of the foundational species in modern peony breeding, lactiflora cultivars offer a wide colour spectrum and fragrance range. Their dependable growth habit and extended vase life make them a staple in both private gardens and large-scale floriculture.

How to plant

What follows are the steps for planting Albert Crousse peony roots:
Peonies flourish in locations with plenty of sunlight and well-draining soil. Choose a location that receives at least six hours of sunlight every day and has organic-rich soil. Create a hole that is 30 cm (12 inches) broad and 10 cm (4 inches) deep. To boost soil fertility, loosen the soil at the bottom of the hole with a garden fork or spade and mix in some compost or well-rotted manure. Remove any stones or trash and break up any clumps. Insert the peony root into the hole so that the eyes (or growth buds) face up and are no more than 5 cm (2 inches) below the soil surface. Backfill the hole with dirt, gently firming it down to remove any air pockets. Thoroughly water the newly planted peony root to help settle the dirt around the roots. Soak the soil around the plant using a watering can or hose, being careful not to wash it away. Mulch the plant’s base with a 5 to 7.5 cm (2 to 3 inch) layer of organic mulch, such as shredded bark or straw.
